Nilpotent Completions of Groups, Grothendieck Pairs, and Four Problems of Baumslag

چکیده
Two groups are said to have the same nilpotent genus if they have the same nilpotent quotients. We answer four questions of Baumslag concerning nilpotent completions. (i) There exists a pair of finitely generated, residually torsion-free-nilpotent groups of the same nilpotent genus such that one is finitely presented and the other is not. (ii) There exists a pair of finitely presented, residually torsion-free-nilpotent groups of the same nilpotent genus such that one has a solvable conjugacy problem and the other does not. (iii) There exists a pair of finitely generated, residually torsion-free-nilpotent groups of the same nilpotent genus such that one has finitely generated second homology H2(−,Z) and the other does not. (iv) A non-trivial normal subgroup of infinite index in a finitely generated parafree group cannot be finitely generated. In proving this last result, we establish that the first L-Betti number of a finitely generated parafree group in the same nilpotent genus as a free group of rank r is r− 1. It follows that the reduced C∗-algebra of the group is simple if r ≥ 2, and that a version of the Freiheitssatz holds for parafree groups.

The true prosoluble completion PS(Γ) of a group Γ is the inverse limit of the projective system of soluble quotients of Γ. Our purpose is to describe examples and to point out some natural open problems. We answer the analogue of a question of Grothendieck for profinite completions by providing examples of pairs of non–isomorphic residually soluble groups with isomorphic true prosoluble complet...

The object of this paper is to describe a simple method for proving that certain groups are residually torsion-free nilpotent, to describe some new parafree groups and to raise some new problems in honour of the memory of Wilhelm Magnus.

متن کاملThe isomorphism problem for residually torsion-free nilpotent groups
Both the conjugacy and isomorphism problems for finitely generated nilpotent groups are recursively solvable. In some recent work, the first author, with a tiny modification of work in the second author’s thesis, proved that the conjugacy problem for finitely presented, residually torsion-free nilpotent groups is recursively unsolvable. Here we complete the algorithmic picture by proving that t...
متن کاملGrothendieck’s Problems concerning Profinite Completions and Representations of Groups
In 1970 Alexander Grothendieck [6] posed the following problem: let Γ1 and Γ2 be finitely presented, residually finite groups, and let u : Γ1 → Γ2 be a homomorphism such that the induced map of profinite completions û : Γ̂1 → Γ̂2 is an isomorphism; does it follow that u is an isomorphism? In this paper we settle this problem by exhibiting pairs of groups u : P ↪→ Γ such that Γ is a direct product...
